How to Choose the Perfect Baby Shower Cake

Whether you’re ordering a cake for yourself or the baby shower you’re planning for someone else, here are a few good rules of thumb to follow to make sure you’re picking the perfect cake:

  1. Make sure the cake complements the theme: Though it doesn’t have to be an exact match, the cake you select for the baby shower should go along with the theme of the shower. Doing something nautical-themed? Animal-themed? High tea? No matter what you settle on, you can find a gorgeous cake that’ll suit the theme. Hint: if the cake looks like it goes well with the baby shower invitations, it'll probably fit the theme.

  2. Make it your own: Customize the flavors of the cake layers and filling, add a cute cake topper (baby shower cake toppers are so fun!), switch up the color, decorate with fresh flowers, extra sweet treats, or any other thoughtful details to make the cake you pick perfect.

  3. Make sure it’s delicious: At ECBG, we work hard to make sure our cakes are both delicious and gorgeous, but if you have to choose, we say flavor matters most. Sure, a beautifully designed cake will catch people’s attention, but no one will remember what it looks like if it doesn’t taste good.

Prefer Custom Cakes? Here’s What to Know

Here at ECBG, we offer a ton of different ways to make each of the cakes in our Cake Shop your own. Choose the cake flavor, filling flavor, color of the frosting, add-ons like French macarons, chocolate chip cookies, candles, and more, or add a message to the top of the cake.

But if you have a specific vision in mind, a completely custom cake might actually be the better way to go. We’re more than happy to work with you on whatever you have in mind, from a meticulously designed themed cake to show-stopping piping and beyond. Send us an inquiry to see how we can help.

Tips for Making Your Own Baby Boy Shower Cake

Although we—naturally—think professional cakes make for a great centerpiece at any event, if you decide you want to make your own baby shower cake, we do have some tips:

  • Plan ahead: You might think the execution of your cake plans are what are most important here, but if you’re going to make your own show-stopping cake at home, especially if you’re not a seasoned cake baker and decorator. Think through what kind of cake you want to make, if you’re going to make a special filling for it or fill it with the same buttercream that you frost the outside with, how you’d like it to look, if you need to invest in any special tools to help you get the job done, and more. This is a super important part of the whole process, so make sure you don’t skip it!

  • Give yourself some time: Don’t try to bake, frost, assemble, and decorate your whole cake the night before the shower. Making everything and finishing your decorating can take a long time. Give yourself more than you think you might need. You can bake your cake layers ahead of time, then wrap them tightly in a few layers of plastic wrap and stash in your freezer until you’re ready for them. You can also make your buttercream ahead of time and either freeze it or just pop it in the fridge for a few days (don’t let it just sit in the fridge for too long though). Just make sure you pull everything out of the freezer with enough time to thaw before you assemble and decorate!

  • Don’t try to do too much: Whether you’ve ever made a formal, fancy, special occasion cake before or not, make sure you’re not trying to overcommit yourself to techniques or to-do’s that you’re not used to doing. Learning new skills is so much fun, but it can be super stressful to try to master new things while you’re trying to make something that you’re hoping to use as an eye-catching centerpiece for a big, exciting event. Simpler is better than getting frustrated because you tried to do way too much. You don't need a tiered cake decorated with edible glitter, intricate design work, or fondant baby booties (or any other fondant decorations). Put down the piping bag.
